Can You Over Power Them?
When you are the stronger player, you can overpower your opponent on the day, time after time, hit hard to them, that is a great way to win because that's the fastest way to finish the competition. Winning that way also expends the lowest amount of your energy. When you are not able to overpower them, or they are your equal in this regard, then you need to win another way.
They Run More Than You?
If you like to run around the court some, and you happen to be faster than your opponent, or better at making angles, you can pressure their movement. However, if they are faster, and/or better at making angles, that is a bad match up for you. If they are better at making angles, and it puts you under pressure to move more, but you keep making angles, can you see how that will work against you?
Pressure Them Like A Boa Constrictor?
If the above two strategies don’t work, then you can take away or give that player much more than they want of time and space. Some people don’t like fast balls hit at them, because their reactions are slow and they panic when the ball is at them. Others hate high slow shots giving them too much time to think, preying on their impatience. They will say “I hate moonballers”. Still others hate being pulled up to the net, because they are allergic to volleys and overheads.
You Like Creative Shot Making?
Using different spins and speeds are also a great way to maintain control, but also increase the chances of a hurt shot. Mixing up your shots can take away necessary rhythm from your opponent, causing them to hit a weaker ball, force an error from them, or create an attackable ball for you to you pressure them or finish the point.
You Like To Run For Days?
Running around the court all over trying to retrieve every ball seems like it makes a lot of sense, but it lacks the intentionality of controlling the point, looking to hurt the opponent, and also finishing. For this player it might be almost control, control, control. And yet, even a blind squirrel finds a nut now and then, and broken clocks are right twice per day. Players CAN go all the way to playing D1 college tennis playing this way, but they will find it extremely difficult to transition to professional tennis where most players are playing more targeted strategies that fit their skills.
